Welcome to Pembroke Pines

Nestled next to Hollywood and Miramar, Pembroke Pines is the 11h largest city in Florida and has been named one of the best places to live in America in 2014 by Money Magazine.

The city’s name was given after Sir Edward Reed, a Member of Britain’s Parliament for the County of Pembroke in 1874, purchased and farmed the land in the 1880s. A road put through this farm was named Pembroke Road and later changed to Pembroke Pines by its first mayor, Dr. Walter Smith Kipnis, because of the pines trees near the road.

During World War II in 1943, Henry D. Perry, a dairy farmer, sold 640 acres of his land to the United States Navy for the use of flight-training. After the war, this land became known as North Perry Field and in 1950, Broward County obtained the land and an airport was developed.

It was after the war that many of the men who retired from the Navy came back to the area to settle down in what was known at that time as the “Village of Pembroke Pines”. In 1960, Pembroke Pines was incorporated into a city. This small city began to see development and Joseph LaCroix, a developer who had 320 acres of land, had it annexed to the city. In 1980, additional land was incorporated and the city continued to see its city limits increased.

In August of 1992, Pembroke Pines saw a surge in population when Hurricane Andrew came through and destroyed an area south of Miami and many of the people in this area came to Pembroke Pines to rebuild their lives and start anew. This sudden increase in population ranked Pembroke Pines in 1999 as one of the “Fastest Growing Cities” in the United States.

Today, Pembroke Pines boasts approximately 164,000 residents according to the U.S. Census and is a bustling city that still maintains a small town friendly feel. Because of the population growth, the city responded and committed itself to the need to provide quality education for its students. They started a Charter School System which still remains the largest Charter School System in the county.

The city’s motto “Join Us-Progress with Us” can be seen in its commitment to its residents. Within miles of the ocean, the city provides shopping centers that are easily accessible by walking or by car, landscaped parks with walking and bike paths and a varied array of entertainment areas for both young and old.
